GSM is fabric mass per area, not the finished hoodie weight
GSM means grams per square metre: a 400 GSM fabric has 400 grams of mass per square metre. The figure describes fabric, whereas a garment weight includes all of the material and components in the finished item. Neither number alone establishes fit or overall quality.
This matters in Fishgoo hoodie searches because “400 GSM,” “400 grams” and “heavyweight” are three different statements. The first has an area unit, the second may describe the complete garment, and the third is a descriptive label that needs a specification beside it.
Chinese listings may use 克重 for fabric weight and 重磅 for heavyweight. A number beside 克重 still needs its unit and component confirmed. 面料成分 identifies fabric composition: it answers what the material is made from, rather than how much fabric the garment uses.
Convert ounces per square yard, then compare actual specifications
One ounce per square yard is approximately 33.906 grams per square metre. Multiply oz/yd² by 33.906 to obtain GSM, or divide GSM by the same number to obtain oz/yd². For example, 10 oz/yd² is about 339 GSM; 400 GSM is about 11.8 oz/yd². Ounces of total garment weight use a different measurement.
| Product example | Fabric weight | Published composition | Published fit or component |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bella + Canvas 4719 | 10 oz/yd² / 339 GSM | 60% cotton / 40% polyester; Athletic Heather is 94% / 6%. | Oversized; brushed interior and double-layer hood. |
| All-Over Print Oversized Cotton Hoodie | 10.97 oz/yd² / 372 GSM main fabric | 80% cotton / 20% polyester main fabric. | Separate 350 GSM ribbing specification. |
Both are marketed as heavyweight, despite different figures. The second also shows why the component matters: its main fabric and ribbing have different GSM values. These are manufacturer examples, not stock claims about our independent catalogue.
The 339-to-372 difference is about 9.7% in fabric mass per area. It does not make the garments otherwise equivalent: their listed composition differs too. Comparing the entire specification answers more than picking the larger number.
Fabric weight, garment weight and parcel weight answer different questions
| Figure | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| GSM | Mass of a square metre of the specified fabric. | Total finished hoodie weight or overall quality. |
| Garment weight | Mass of the complete item in the stated size. | A fabric GSM without knowing the material area and components. |
| Packed parcel weight | Mass of the shipment including its packaging. | A comparable fabric specification for every garment inside. |
Consider a simplified example using 1.5 square metres of fabric. At 300 GSM, that fabric alone weighs 450 grams; at 400 GSM, it weighs 600 grams. This is an illustration of the units, not a predicted weight for an actual hoodie. It excludes additional layers, hardware, decoration and packaging.
Now imagine that the two garments use different amounts of fabric. An oversized shape, a lined hood or a longer body changes the comparison before the material number changes. A heavier complete garment therefore does not automatically prove a higher GSM. Printful’s separate hoodie-weight explainer likewise discusses garment components and packaging alongside fabric mass.
A fabric figure is useful when it answers your actual requirement
If the requirement is a particular fabric mass, an explicit specification is meaningful. If the requirement is a boxy outer layer, width and body length remain central. If the requirement is a particular fibre blend, composition is essential. One number cannot replace all three questions.
The published examples also show that a colour variant can change composition: Bella + Canvas 4719’s Athletic Heather differs from its standard blend. A specification saved without the chosen colour can therefore lose information even when the garment model stays the same.
Our catalogue does not expose verified GSM fields for its hoodie records. A saved product weight or a marketing description should not be promoted into an invented fabric-weight figure. Keep the GSM field unresolved until the actual seller specification supplies it.
The Netherlands sneaker and cropped-knit arrival feedback includes a navy knit that felt very cropped on a 176 cm wearer. It is a useful body-length example, not a measured GSM or composition result.
Give the fabric number a job in the wardrobe
For someone planning a roomy outer layer, the outline and space for clothing underneath may matter more than winning a GSM comparison. For someone seeking a specific fabric weight, an explicit figure is essential. These are different shopping intentions, and both are more precise than an unexplained search for the best heavyweight hoodie.
Browse Fishgoo hoodie finds with the fabric unit, composition and garment dimensions recorded separately. Our Chinese streetwear design article develops the silhouette question; the QC guide covers order evidence. A photograph or a scale reading can add context, but neither should be presented as a laboratory measurement of fabric GSM.
