Fishgoo Bag Materials — Leather vs PU vs Coated Fabric

Leather, PU and coated fabric are different material descriptions. Compare definitions, published construction examples and a catalogue record whose wording leaves composition unresolved.

Leather, PU and coated fabric are not interchangeable labels

What is the difference between leather and a PU-coated fabric bag, and can a seller’s product wording tell you which one you are buying? Material definitions answer the first question. Our two actual pouch records show why the second still needs a component-level specification.

For a Fishgoo bag shortlist, the useful distinction is the base material and its finish. Leather originates from animal hide or skin; a textile coated with polyurethane has a fabric base and a polymer layer. PU can also appear as a coating on leather. Seeing the letters PU therefore leaves a second question: what is underneath it?

The Leather Working Group’s terminology describes full-grain, corrected-grain and split leather by the part or treatment of the hide. These words are more specific than a seller’s broad leather label. They describe material structure, rather than assigning a universal score to the finished bag.

A bag can mix materials: a coated body, leather trim, woven lining and a separate strap. Identifying one component does not describe the rest. A comparison is clearer when “outer body,” “trim” and “lining” stay attached to their respective specifications.

What full-grain, corrected-grain and split leather actually describe

Leather terminology, paraphrased from the Leather Working Group
TermMaterial distinctionUseful question about a bag
Full-grainThe original grain surface has been retained without corrective mechanical removal.Which component uses this leather, and what finish is applied?
Corrected-grainThe grain surface has been partly removed mechanically and finished. Is the appearance created by the finish or left visible beneath it?
Split leatherLeather from a lower or middle layer produced when a hide is split. How is that layer finished, and where is it used?
SuedeLeather or split leather with a mechanically produced velvet-like surface. What specific care instructions apply to this product?

These distinctions help explain why smoothness alone is a weak buying shortcut. A photograph of a uniform surface does not tell you which underlying layer has been used. Nor does a textured photograph settle the material identity. The useful next evidence is a component specification from the seller or manufacturer.

For a daily bag, the material description also belongs beside its opening, strap and load arrangement. A small occasion pouch and a work bag do different jobs. Choosing by a leather label alone misses the parts of the design that determine whether the object can carry what you need.

Three published constructions that clarify the PU question

Manufacturer examples from Bellroy’s materials documentation
Published exampleBase and treatmentWhy the distinction matters
Venture Phone Pocket / Card Pocket fabric500-denier woven polyamide with double polyurethane backing. The backing is separate from the woven outer material.
Element Coated NylonNylon finished with a water-based wax resin and polyurethane coating. The fibre name and surface treatment are two specifications.
FutureGrain leather alternativeRecycled polyester base with solvent-free PU.A leather-like appearance can come from a textile-and-polymer construction.

These are examples from Bellroy’s own published material range, not claims about products offered by an unrelated seller. Their value is the way the components are named. “PU bag” is less informative than a description that identifies the substrate, coating and intended component.

A water-resistance statement needs the same precision. A claim about a fabric should remain a fabric claim unless the description addresses the completed bag. An opening, seam or closure is a separate part of the construction; the exterior material name cannot answer its specification.

A real catalogue example: leather wording beside canvas wording

Our saved 10 October records illustrate why this matters. The green Goyard-labelled pouch is titled “Green Leather Pouch” and its description calls the material leather. The blue-and-gold pouch describes Goyardine canvas. Both have a ¥108 / approximately $15 starting item reference. The shared price does not resolve the different material claims.

What the two saved descriptions establish
RecordSaved wordingStill unresolved
Green pouchLeather in the title and description.A component-level material specification and evidence for that claim.
Blue-and-gold pouchGoyardine canvas in the description. The actual composition and treatment of this seller’s item.

The record descriptions are seller/catalogue language, not independent material analysis. The practical result is to keep both candidates open until the base material and the component being described are clear. Rewriting one of them as verified leather or verified brand canvas would hide the gap rather than help the buyer.

Same pouch budget, three different buying requirements

The two ¥108 pouch references have the same saved starting price, so a price sort cannot choose between them. The next question depends on what you need the pouch to do. A preference for leather, an animal-free requirement and a requirement to hold a particular phone each need different evidence.

How the intended use changes the material comparison
Your requirementWhat the saved record answersInformation needed to choose
Specifically animal leatherThe green record uses leather wording.Which component is leather, what type it is, and evidence supporting the seller claim.
An animal-free pouchThe blue record uses canvas wording.Body composition, trim, lining and other components; canvas wording alone does not settle the entire item.
Space for a phone, keys and walletBoth records show pouch shapes.Usable internal dimensions and opening width against the objects you intend to carry.

A material label answers a different question from capacity. An exterior width can also exceed the usable interior width because seams, lining and the closure occupy space. With no verified usable dimensions in the saved structured fields, neither pouch can be recommended as a fit for a specific phone model.

The decision becomes concrete once those missing details arrive: retain the item whose component specification meets the material preference and whose usable space meets the carrying requirement. That is stronger than choosing the more convincing leather-like photograph.

A useful material comparison ends with a specific choice

Suppose the intended bag is for carrying a phone, keys and a small wallet. The relevant comparison can begin with dimensions, opening and strap arrangement, then use the outer-material specification to distinguish remaining candidates. If the intended purchase is specifically animal leather, a textile-backed PU construction is not an equivalent specification, however similar the photograph looks.

For someone who wants an animal-free material, the opposite distinction matters: a PU coating does not by itself establish that the entire item is animal-free, because its base and trim still need to be identified. These are different requirements, so the same list should not declare a single material universally best.

Browse the Fishgoo bag finds with these component names in mind. The budget article compares item-price references, while the outfit comparisons show how a visual role and an item budget work together. Material, dimensions and price become useful when they describe the same offer.

The Cardholder photos from warehouse QC to arrival puts these limits into a visual case: grain-like appearance and a positive feel in hand do not identify the material composition.
